Hackers announce "World War III" on Twitter

Recently, the Twitter accounts of the New York Post and United Press have been taken over by hackers. The hackers then uploaded fake messages, spreading rumors about hostility between the US and China.

One such tweet read, "World War III has begun."Another message claimed that a US aircraft carrier was "engaged in active combat" against Chinese warships.
The tweets were deleted soon after.

UPI acknowledged the hack and gave a figure of 6 fake headlines posted in a span of 10 minutes. It also tweeted, "six fake headlines were posted in about 10 minutes."

Another of the tweets by the hackers said, "Just in: Bank of America CEO calls for calm: Savings accounts will not be affected by federal reserve decision."

Over the last few years, several such media houses have had their Twitter accounts hacked. Some of them are the Agence France-Presse and BBC. It was only earlier this week that the Twitter feed of the Central Command of the Pentagon was over taken by a group sympathising with the Islamic State. (IS)
