Basnet, Koju win KTM Marathon

Arjun Basnet of Nepal Army and Kanchhi Maya Koju of Bhaktapur won the 3rd Kathmandu Marathon men’s and women’s title respectively on Saturday.
Basnet, the runners up of last edition, clocked 2hrs 25:36mins to win the title worth US Dollar 5,000.
Title holder Uttam Khatri of Nepal Army trailed behind his collegue Rajendra Bhandary, who satisfied in the second spot timing 2hrs 28:38mins, in the third position with the time of 2hrs 30:02mins.
Bhandary, who was in neck-in-neck with winner Basnet till the 39km, has to slow his run owing to his muscle cramp. Bhandary, participating for the first time in the event, said that it was really unfortunate not to win today. "I hoped to improve my timing but the muscle cramps forbid me."
After being pushed to the third position, Khatri told the reporters that due to the lack of training he could not defend his title. The 5th National gold medalist Arjun Prasad Dhakal found himself in difficulty to finish at the fifth spot. He walked to finish the race after getting problem with his health.
Kanchhi Maya Koju of Bhaktapur led the women´s marathon, included for the first time in the event, with 3hrs 05:43mins. Koju, who returned from Japan, was winner of the last edition’s half marathon in the women’s section. The winner in the women section bags the purse of US Dollar 3,000.
Koju was followed by Krishneshwori Shintakala of APF with the time of 3hrs 11:25mins while Surya Maya Rai of APF trailed in the third spot by clocking 3hrs 13:44mins.
The Nepal Army also took top two spots in men´s half marathon while Nepal Police Club (NPC) had to satisfy with the third spot. Army men Leter Singh Khatri and Raj Kumar Bista finished in first two positions while Bhumi Raj Rai of Police remained in the third spot.
In the women’s half marathon, Bindra Shrestha of APF, Geeta Chhetry of APF and Hari Devi Raj Lawat of Bhaktapur finished first, second and third respectively.
Likewise in men’s 5km race, Moti Lal Chaudhary and Kalyan Baniya of Army claimed first two spot while Narendra Bhatta of Nepal Police contend himself in the third spot.
In the school’s 5km race, Sakuntala Budhathoki and Prakash Paneru finished first in the girl’s and boy’s section respectively.
Similary, in the 3km wheelchair race Bharat Bikram Baniya and Sonik Dhakal led the race in the men and women’s category respectively.
A total of 1,972 sprinters contested in the event.
